Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong recently undertook his first train journey in India, traveling from Kolkata's Howrah Station to Shantiniketan. His two-day visit to Visva-Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore, included stops at Rabindra-Bhavana and Cheena-Bhavana, showcasing Tagore's legacy and India-China cultural ties. Cheena-Bhavana, India’s oldest Chinese studies center, symbolizes decades of collaboration. Xu's visit emphasizes education and culture as bridges between nations, reflecting shared histories and fostering future partnerships. He also met with the university’s Vice Chancellor during his stay.

Xu Feihong, the Chinese Ambassador to India, embarked on his maiden train journey in the country on Monday, traveling from Kolkata's historic Howrah Station to the tranquil town of Shantiniketan in West Bengal. His two-day visit centers around Visva-Bharati University, a revered institution founded by Rabindranath Tagore.
"Embarked on my first train journey in India from the iconic Howrah station, the vibrant heart of Kolkata: On route to the serene abode of Rabindranath Tagore – Shantiniketan. Experiencing Bengal’s timeless rhythm and beauty firsthand. What an experience," shared Xu Feihong on X (formerly Twitter), capturing the essence of his journey.
A Journey Through Bengal’s Heartland
The Ambassador boarded the Shantiniketan Express at approximately 10 a.m. and reached his destination around 1 p.m., traveling in the chair car alongside an entourage of nine, which included Xu Wei, the Chinese Consul General in Kolkata. His journey reflects a growing interest in cultural exchanges between India and China, with Visva-Bharati serving as a symbolic venue for such interactions.
Exploring Tagore’s Legacy
Upon arrival, Xu Feihong visited Rabindra-Bhavana, a central part of the Uttarayan complex that celebrates the life and works of Rabindranath Tagore. This sprawling complex houses a wealth of Tagore’s personal artifacts, including manuscripts, paintings, letters, and photographs. The ambassador was able to witness firsthand the rich history preserved within its walls.
Rabindra-Bhavana, as detailed on the university's website, is a treasure trove of Tagore’s legacy. It boasts 1,580 original paintings by Tagore, 554 works by other artists, and an expansive collection of photographs (11,380), curios (3,855), and statues (52). Its architecture and furnishings offer visitors a glimpse into the poet’s life, making it an essential stop for anyone exploring Tagore’s world.
Spotlight on Cheena-Bhavana
Another highlight of Xu Feihong’s visit was Cheena-Bhavana, the Department of Chinese Studies at Visva-Bharati. Established in 1937 by Rabindranath Tagore and Professor Tan Yun-Shan, it remains India’s oldest center for Chinese studies. Cheena-Bhavana has long been a cornerstone of academic and cultural collaboration between India and China, hosting exchange programs with Chinese universities and fostering dialogue.
In recent years, the department has been a focal point for celebrating the shared cultural history of the two nations. Earlier this year, a delegation of Chinese scholars participated in an international seminar on Tagore, commemorating 75 years of India-China diplomatic relations.
A Meeting to Strengthen Ties
During his stay, Xu Feihong is scheduled to meet with Visva-Bharati’s Vice Chancellor, Probir Kumar Ghosh, to discuss potential collaborations and initiatives. The ambassador and his delegation will spend the night in Shantiniketan before returning to Kolkata on Tuesday.
Bridging Cultures Through Education
Visva-Bharati University, founded in 1921 by Rabindranath Tagore, has long been a beacon of cultural and educational exchange. Originally functioning as a college until India's independence, the institution now serves as a central university and continues to honor its founder’s vision of blending the arts, education, and international understanding.
Xu Feihong’s visit not only underscores the enduring relevance of Tagore’s ideals but also highlights the role of education and culture in fostering connections between nations. By retracing the footsteps of Tagore and engaging with the university's vibrant academic community, the Chinese Ambassador has taken a significant step toward strengthening the cultural bridge between India and China.
