
Over the last few years, while leading app developers have targeted their services at tier-1 cities in India, new-age domestic players are now targeting users residing in tier-2 cities and beyond, a new report has shown. Applications are now focusing on these areas, where maximum growth has been seen in users over the last 1-2 years.
Strategy consulting firm Redseer Strategy Consultants in a report on Wednesday said that tier-2 cities & beyond are seeing vernacular and regional content-focused platforms which have been able to serve the digital content consumption needs of those residing in these areas. Research shows that most of the users across e-tailing and gaming come from tier 2+ cities.
Data shows that prominent global apps usually target metro cities and tier-1 users who are largely English-speaking users.
The time spent here on user-generated content is 2x of platform-generated content.
India is currently home to the second-largest internet user base in the world, at 780 million. Redseer expects India to surpass 1 billion internet users by 2030.
Cheaper data costs and affordable smartphones (starting at US$60) have been the fundamental drivers of increasing online time. This sets the stage for high digital opportunities for consumer internet players, the report said.
