US Vice President JD Vance’s first official visit to India, alongside his family and senior officials, focused on strengthening US-India ties in trade, defense, and technology. Vance and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed regional and global issues, finalizing a roadmap for a trade deal aimed at doubling bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. The visit also celebrated cultural connections, with Usha Vance’s Indian roots inspiring pride. Vance emphasized mutual respect and innovation as key to advancing shared goals.

In a significant step towards deepening bilateral cooperation, US Vice President JD Vance and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held comprehensive discussions on Monday, focusing on trade, defense, and key global issues. The visit, Vance’s first official trip to India, underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.

A High-Profile Delegation

Accompanied by his Indian-origin wife, Usha Vance, and their three children—Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel—Vice President Vance arrived in New Delhi on April 21 for a four-day visit, along with a delegation of senior US officials. The trip comes at a pivotal time as both nations work towards finalizing a bilateral trade agreement aimed at addressing tariffs and enhancing market access.

Upon arrival at Delhi’s Palam Airbase, the Vice President was warmly received by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The visit also coincides with recent developments in US trade policy, as President Donald Trump temporarily paused a sweeping tariff regime affecting multiple countries, including India.

Strengthening Strategic Cooperation

During their meeting in New Delhi, Vance and Modi reviewed progress in areas such as energy, defense, and emerging technologies. The two leaders exchanged views on regional and global developments, emphasizing that diplomacy and dialogue remain the preferred paths forward. The discussions were followed by a delegation-level meeting and concluded with dinner hosted by Modi for the Second Family of the United States.

Highlighting the significance of these talks, Vance expressed optimism about the potential for the two nations to achieve shared goals. "I told Prime Minister Modi he has approval ratings that would make me jealous," he remarked, adding a personal note of admiration for Modi’s leadership.

A Roadmap for Trade

Trade was a cornerstone of Vance’s visit, with significant progress announced on Tuesday. In a speech delivered in Jaipur, he revealed that the US and India have finalized the Terms of Reference (ToR) for their trade negotiations. This agreement sets the stage for a comprehensive trade deal that seeks to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

“When President Trump and Prime Minister Modi announced in February that our goal is to more than double trade, both leaders meant it,” said Vance. He emphasized that the finalized ToR is a critical milestone in achieving this vision, paving the way for economic growth, job creation, and stronger supply chains.

Critiquing previous US policies, Vance noted that past administrations viewed India merely as a source of low-cost labor and failed to appreciate its strategic importance. "We are not here to preach," he emphasized. Instead, he outlined a vision of partnership based on mutual respect and innovation, aimed at creating a brighter future for both nations.

Celebrating Cultural Ties

Beyond politics and trade, the visit also had a personal dimension. Usha Vance’s ancestral roots in Vadluru village, located in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district, have sparked excitement among locals. Although the village is not on the official itinerary, the Second Lady’s connection to the region has brought pride and anticipation to its residents.

The Vance family’s itinerary included visits to iconic Indian landmarks such as Jaipur’s Amber Fort and Agra’s Taj Mahal. On Wednesday, they are scheduled to visit the City Palace in Jaipur, further underscoring the cultural and historical richness of India.

A Vision for the Future

In his various speeches, Vance reiterated the US commitment to building a future with India based on shared values and common goals. “The most profound responsibility is to provide a better society for the next generation,” he said. By fostering innovation, supporting families, and enhancing trade, Vance envisions a partnership that benefits both nations.

As the US and India finalize their trade negotiations, this visit marks a turning point in their relationship. With shared ambitions and a roadmap in place, both nations are poised to unlock new opportunities and chart a prosperous path forward together.
