INDORE: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday lauded the contribution of non-resident Indians and said that remittances sent to the country by them rose by 12% in only a year to around $100 billion in 2022.

"I recognise that remittances, which come from abroad by Indians who migrated, are about $100 billion for the year 2022. This is one of the highest," the finance minister said at the Pravasi 巳haratiya Divas (PBD) summit in Indore.

"Within a year, which was post-pandemic, people thought Indian workers would not go back abroad again. They have not only gone back but more of them have gone for very useful employment and the remittance numbers have gone up by 12% within a year," she said.

Sitharaman described NRIs as the "real ambassadors of India" and urged them to use made-in-lndia products so that the country's brand can be promoted across the globe.
