Adani Enterprises will develop a 12.9 km ropeway between Sonprayag and Kedarnath, reducing the 8-9 hour trek to just 36 minutes. With a ₹4,081 crore investment under India’s ‘Parvatmala’ program, the project will transport 1,800 passengers per hour, boosting tourism and Uttarakhand's economy. Construction will take six years, with Adani operating it for 29 years, blending modern infrastructure with spiritual significance while creating significant employment opportunities.

Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL), the flagship company of the Adani Group, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize one of India’s most challenging pilgrimages. The company has secured the Letter of Award (LoA) from the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) for the development of a ropeway project connecting Sonprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.

With an investment of ₹4,081 crore, the project will be executed under the company's Roads, Metro, Rail and Water (RMRW) division. Spanning 12.9 kilometers, the ropeway is set to drastically reduce the travel time for pilgrims from an arduous 8 to 9-hour trek to a mere 36 minutes.

A Game-Changer for Pilgrimage and Local Economy

Once operational, the ropeway will have the capacity to transport 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, significantly easing the journey for the millions of devotees who visit the Kedarnath shrine annually. The Kedarnath pilgrimage, which attracts nearly 20 lakh visitors every year, is poised to become safer, faster, and far more convenient.

Beyond enhancing the traveling experience for pilgrims, the ropeway is expected to provide a major boost to Uttarakhand’s economy. The project is anticipated to create both direct and indirect employment opportunities while increasing tourism, driving local development, and improving the livelihoods of people in the region.

Part of India’s Visionary Ropeway Development Program

The Kedarnath ropeway will be developed under the Government of India’s National Ropeways Development Programme, known as ‘Parvatmala.’ The project will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, operating on a revenue-sharing basis with NHLML.

The construction phase is projected to take six years, following which Adani Enterprises will manage the ropeway's operations for 29 years. This long-term partnership underscores the Adani Group's commitment to fostering infrastructure that serves both the nation and its communities.

Bridging Spirituality and Modern Infrastructure

“The Kedarnath ropeway is more than just an engineering feat – it symbolizes a connection between devotion and modern infrastructure,” stated Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group. He emphasized that the project will make the sacred journey to Kedarnath safer and more accessible while also providing new opportunities for the people of Uttarakhand.

Further highlighting the project's significance, the company remarked, “This landmark initiative reflects our dedication to building infrastructure that uplifts communities and honors the faith of millions. By enhancing connectivity to one of India’s most revered shrines, we aim to strengthen the state’s economy and create a better pilgrim experience.”

AEL’s Growing Infrastructure Portfolio

Since its entry into the roads and highways sector in 2018, Adani Enterprises has steadily expanded its infrastructure portfolio under the RMRW division. The company currently oversees 14 projects across various models, including Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), and Toll-Operate-Transfer (TOT), covering over 5,000 lane kilometers.

The Kedarnath ropeway project stands out as a monumental endeavor that blends cutting-edge technology with spiritual significance. By offering pilgrims a safer and more comfortable journey, this initiative marks a pivotal step in improving connectivity while paving the way for economic growth in Uttarakhand.

This ambitious project not only aligns with India’s infrastructural goals but also reflects the Adani Group’s vision of transformative development that uplifts both the nation and its people.
