India’s rising stature in global science competitions was reaffirmed as five Indian students clinched gold medals at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026, hosted in Bucaramanga, Colombia. With a clean sweep of golds, India secured a joint first-place finish alongside Russia, China, Kazakhstan, South Korea, and Taiwan in one of the world’s most prestigious contests for high school students.
The competition brought together 381 participants from 87 countries, making India’s flawless performance particularly noteworthy. Each member of the Indian contingent earned a gold medal, placing the country firmly among the elite performers of this year’s Olympiad.
The gold medalists are Kansisk Jain from Pune, Riddhesh Anant Bendale from Indore, Rishit Garg from Delhi, Shresth Suraiya from Mumbai, and Svait Joshi from Ahmedabad. Their achievement underscores the growing depth of scientific talent emerging from India’s schools.
Rigorous Competition on a Global Platform
The International Physics Olympiad is widely regarded as one of the toughest academic competitions for secondary school students. Participants are evaluated through demanding theoretical examinations and complex experimental tests that measure conceptual clarity, analytical ability, and laboratory skills.

The students were mentored by Professor Anwesh Mazumdar of HBCSE-TIFR and Dr. Leena Joshi, with scientific observers Professor Ananda Dasgupta of IISER Kolkata and Ms. Nisha Kelkar providing additional guidance. Educators credited this structured mentorship and focused preparation as key factors behind the team’s exceptional showing.
