A report says that Chinese students are still important to U.S. universities, but the attention has shifted to other markets, especially India.
A study by the International Educational Exchange (IIE) said that India is the U.S.'s top recruitment market for both undergraduate and graduate programmes in 2023. The study is based on the answers that 527 colleges and universities in the U.S. gave between April 27 and May 19, 2023.
Most U.S. colleges and universities still want to get students from China, but the report found that the attention has shifted to getting students from other countries, especially India. 77% of them were looking for graduate students, while 57% were looking for kids in their first year of college.
study from the Council of Graduate Schools showed that Indian students are driving the growth of applications and enrollments at the graduate level in the U.S. These results agreed with that study.
After India, the study said that Vietnam (48%), South Korea (41%), Brazil (40%) and China (39%) were the other top priority markets for undergraduate students in the U.S. At the college level, China came in second, but it was mentioned less often (42%) than India.
In 2021-2022, China was the country that sent the most students to the U.S. to go to college. They made up 30.5% of all foreign students in the country. Indian enrollments, on the other hand, rose by 18.9% from one year to the next. Research from CGS and the IIE shows that more Indians are applying to graduate programmes. This, along with the IIE's recent study, suggests that the number of Indian students in U.S. colleges will likely rise from the 21% seen in 2021-22.
