In a momentous celebration of peace and non-violence, a new statue of Mahatma Gandhi was revealed to the public on February 28, 2026, at the India Club in Hong Kong. The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the Indian community abroad, bringing together members of the diaspora and supporters to honor the enduring influence of India's Father of the Nation.
The unveiling was conducted by His Excellency Shri Pradeep Kumar Rawat, Ambassador of India to the People’s Republic of China, accompanied by Mrs. Rawat, Consul General Shri Rajesh N. Naik, and Mr. Nanu Lachman, President of the India Club. This initiative was made possible through the diligent organization and leadership of the Consul General of India in Hong Kong, Shri Rajesh N. Naik.
The event, jointly organized by the Consulate General of India for Hong Kong and Macau SARs and the India Club, drew a substantial audience eager to participate in this cultural commemoration. The statue stands as a physical reminder of Gandhi's philosophical contributions that continue to resonate worldwide.
During his keynote address, Ambassador Rawat offered thoughtful reflections on Gandhi's remarkable journey from being an overseas Indian to eventually becoming revered as the Father of the Nation. He highlighted how Gandhi's courageous stand against colonial rule became a source of inspiration for numerous global leaders and social movements. The Ambassador emphasized that Gandhi's core principles of Satyagraha (truth-force) and Ahimsa (non-violence) remain profoundly relevant in our contemporary world, offering guidance for addressing modern challenges.
The India Club itself represents a significant cultural institution, having served the community since its establishment in 1941. For more than eight decades, it has fostered a multicultural environment that promotes unity and community engagement throughout the region.
This unveiling not only celebrates Gandhi's legacy but also strengthens the cultural bonds between nations, as noted by various speakers at the event. The statue will now stand as a permanent tribute to Gandhi's vision of peaceful resistance and universal brotherhood in Hong Kong.
