Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, an Indian-origin otolaryngologist, has become the 180th president of the American Medical Association (AMA), making history as its first Indian-origin leader. A native of Flint, Michigan, he is celebrated for his public health contributions, including addressing Flint's water crisis. Despite battling a brain tumor, his career exemplifies resilience, community service, and dedicated leadership.

In a historic milestone for the medical community, Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, an accomplished otolaryngologist specializing in ear, nose, and throat care, has taken office as the 180th president of the American Medical Association (AMA). This marks a significant achievement as Dr. Mukkamala becomes the first physician of Indian origin to lead the prestigious organization. His inauguration took place on June 10, 2025, during a ceremony that underscored his dedication to the medical profession and his profound personal journey.

Dr. Mukkamala’s association with the AMA began during his residency, and his commitment has only grown over the years. He currently heads the AMA's Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force, reflecting his focus on addressing critical health challenges. His leadership journey, however, has not been without its trials. Just last November, he was diagnosed with an 8-centimeter brain tumor, a diagnosis that cast doubt on his ability to pursue his goals. “A few months ago, I didn’t know if this night would even be possible,” he shared during his swearing-in ceremony, a poignant reminder of his resilience and determination.

A native of Flint, Michigan, Dr. Mukkamala’s story is deeply rooted in his family’s immigrant journey. His parents, both physicians, moved to Flint from India in the early 1970s, where they built a life centered on service and care for their community. Inspired by their example, Dr. Mukkamala chose to follow in their footsteps, dedicating his career to improving the health and well-being of Flint residents.

Dr. Mukkamala’s contributions to Flint extend beyond his medical practice. During the city’s water crisis, he played a pivotal role in addressing the widespread contamination issues. As chair of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, he championed projects aimed at reducing the harmful effects of lead exposure on children, demonstrating a deep commitment to public health and community welfare.

Over the years, Dr. Mukkamala has received numerous accolades for his work. In 2009, he was elected to the AMA Council on Science and Public Health, where he served as chair from 2016 to 2017. He went on to join the AMA Board of Trustees in 2017 and was re-elected in 2021. His achievements have also been recognized with the AMA Foundation’s “Excellence in Medicine” Leadership Award, further cementing his reputation as a leader in the field.

Dr. Mukkamala’s academic journey began at the University of Michigan Medical School, followed by a residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. These formative years laid the foundation for a career marked by exceptional clinical expertise and a passion for service.
