Notably, the Indian spirits market showcases diversity beyond just whisky brands. While the Iconiq White Whisky by Allied Blenders and Distillers took the top spot, selling an impressive 1.6 million cases in 2023, the country's spirits landscape extends well beyond the whisky segment. Three prominent brandy brands - Courier Napoleon and Mansion House brandy by Tilaknagar Industries, as well as Radico Khaitan's Morpheus brandy - have also demonstrated strong performance. Additionally, India is home to the successful vodka brand Magic Moments and the rum brand 1965, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the country's spirits trends and innovation.
In a remarkable turn of events, India has solidified its position as a spirited juggernaut on the global stage. According to the latest report by Drinks International, a third of the 30 fastest-growing spirits brands in the world hail from the subcontinent, showcasing the country's remarkable prowess in the spirits industry.
The report, titled "The Millionaires' Club," highlighted a remarkable milestone – six out of the top ten whisky brands globally are now Indian, reflecting the growing dominance of the brown spirit in the Indian market, which commands nearly two-thirds of the overall spirits landscape.
"In a year when India became the world's largest country by population, it also solidified itself as a spirits world juggernaut," the report stated. "The excise issues, that have always made trading in the region difficult, persist today but it becomes truer with each year – if you crack the Indian market, the potential is almost limitless."
This remarkable feat is exemplified by the explosive growth of Iconiq White Whisky, a product of Allied Blenders and Distillers (ABD), which sold a staggering 1.6 million cases in 2023, representing a remarkable 1500% increase. This impressive performance underscores the power of India's domestic distribution networks and the unwavering commitment of producers to innovation and premiumization.
The spirits trends in India are equally diverse, with three brandy brands – Courier Napoleon and Mansion House brandy by Tilaknagar Industries, and Radico Khaitan's Morpheus brandy – as well as the vodka brand Magic Moments and the rum brand 1965, all hailing from the country.
"Our tenacious efforts towards innovation and premiumisation, especially in the brandy category, have given notable thrust to our volume growth," said Ahmed Rahimtoola, the chief marketing officer of Tilaknagar Industries. "Our brands have been recording a robust double-digit growth every year, and we are confident of taking this momentum forward."
The report also highlighted the continued dominance of Indian whisky brands on the global stage, with United Spirits' McDowell retaining its title as the world's largest whisky brand, despite a modest 1.9% growth in 2023. In total, thirteen of the world's top 30 whisky brands by volume are Indian, including the likes of Royal Stag, Imperial Blue, Blenders Pride, and Officer's Choice.
As the Indian market continues to evolve, with 100 million people expected to enter the legal alcohol consumption age bracket in the next five years, the global spirits industry is taking notice. Major players, including Diageo and Pernod Ricard, have already identified India as one of their top three priority markets, underscoring the immense potential for growth and expansion.
"Even though the majority of these sales are domestic, producers such as Radico Khaitan, Pernod Ricard and Diageo have all invested significantly in premium single malts for the export market, which will see a growth in global marketing and consumption of Indian whisky," the report noted. "However, it will also likely drive the premiumisation of domestic whisky drinking and therefore take away market share from our millionaire producers in the future."
As India continues to captivate the global spirits industry with its unparalleled growth and innovation, the future looks bright for the country's spirited ascent. With a burgeoning domestic market and a growing presence on the international stage, India's spirits juggernaut is undoubtedly set to leave an indelible mark on the global landscape.
