A handwritten letter from 1974 by Steve Jobs, recently auctioned for Rs 4.32 crore, reveals his desire to attend the Kumbh Mela. Addressed to childhood friend Tim Brown, the letter reflects Jobs' exploration of Zen Buddhism and his spiritual journey. Although he never attended the festival, his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, honored his wish by visiting the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, participating in rituals and spiritual practices. This visit beautifully connects to Jobs' quest for spiritual enlightenment.

A remarkable handwritten letter from 1974 by the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has recently come to light, highlighting his aspiration to attend the Kumbh Mela. This heartfelt letter, which was auctioned for an impressive Rs 4.32 crore in 2021, was addressed to his childhood friend Tim Brown and revealed Jobs' desire to experience the spiritual magnificence of the Kumbh Mela.

During this transformative period, Jobs was deeply immersed in exploring Zen Buddhism and seeking spiritual enlightenment. In 1974, he traveled to India with the hope of visiting Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram in Uttarakhand, only to discover that the revered spiritual leader had passed away the year before. Nevertheless, Jobs spent time at Kainchi Dham, drawing inspiration from Karoli Baba’s teachings, which significantly shaped his worldview and influenced both his personal and professional journeys.

Although Jobs never had the chance to attend the festival, his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, made it a reality by visiting the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj on January 13. Embracing her spiritual connection, Laurene, who has been given the Hindu name “Kamala” by her spiritual guru Swami Kailashanand Giri, participated in rituals including the ‘pattabhishek’ for the respected leader Vyasanand Giri Maharaj.

Dressed in a flowing white gown and an orange shawl, Laurene engaged in prayers, meditation, and various practices such as Kriya Yoga and Pranayama. Despite facing some allergies on her second day, she was accompanied by a 40-member entourage that helped her fully immerse herself in the rich spiritual traditions of the festival. This heartfelt homage to Jobs’ dreams reflects a beautiful continuity of his spiritual quest, celebrating the essence of the Kumbh Mela.

Here’s what Jobs wrote in the letter

Tim,

I have read your letter many times

I do not know what to say.

Many mornings have come and gone people have came and went

I have loved and I have cried many times.

Somehow, though, beneath it all it doesn’t change – do you understand?

I am now living on a farm in the mountains between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. I wish to go to India for the Kumba Mela, which starts in April. I will be leaving sometime in March, not really certain yet. If you desire, and I am still here when you arive, we can come up here in the mountains together and you can tell me your thoughts and feelings, which I did not fully understand from your letter.

There is a fire in the other room and I am getting cold here. I will end by saying I do not even know where to begin.

Shanti,

Steve Jobs
