Wang Yi and Jaishankar Meet, Call for Responsible Leadership and Stronger BRICS Coordination

China and India must keep the broader interests of humanity at the forefront while shaping their bilateral engagement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Wednesday.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that as two major developing nations, China and India carry significant global responsibilities. He called on both sides to reinforce the improving trajectory of their relationship and deepen coordination on regional and international matters.

A Call for Major Power Responsibility

During the discussions, Wang highlighted the need for both countries to act with a heightened sense of accountability in global affairs. He stressed that collaboration between Beijing and New Delhi could contribute to shaping a more multipolar world order and advancing what he described as greater inclusivity and balance in international relations.

According to Wang, strengthening bilateral ties would not only benefit the two nations but

also serve broader global stability. He urged sustained high-level communication and implementation of key understandings previously reached by the leadership of both countries.

Expanding Areas of Cooperation

The Chinese foreign minister proposed expanding engagement across multiple sectors, including trade and economic collaboration, media exchanges, and people-to-people interactions. He underlined the importance of managing sensitive matters constructively to prevent friction from undermining progress.

In addition, Wang encouraged deeper coordination within multilateral frameworks, particularly BRICS. He said enhanced cooperation among BRICS members would amplify the collective voice of developing nations and better safeguard their shared interests on global platforms.

China, he added, remains supportive of India’s role in hosting this year’s BRICS summit and expressed readiness to work closely with New Delhi to ensure the event’s success.

India’s Position Reaffirmed

Responding to Wang’s remarks, Jaishankar reiterated that India’s positions on issues concerning Taiwan and Xizang remain unchanged. He stated that New Delhi respects China’s sovereignty and continues to approach the bilateral relationship with a constructive and forward-looking outlook.

Jaishankar noted that India remains committed to fostering a stable and cooperative partnership with China, underscoring the importance of dialogue in managing differences and expanding areas of convergence.

Momentum Amid Strategic Complexity

The meeting reflects ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two Asian powers at a time when global geopolitical dynamics are shifting. Both countries have frequently described themselves as key voices of the Global South and have sought greater representation for developing economies in international institutions.

While challenges persist in the broader relationship, including sensitive political and security concerns, the dialogue suggests continued efforts to stabilise and strengthen ties through communication and multilateral coordination.
