The Great Unicorn Hunt, a program by Kofounderz Team aims to identify potential market disruptors

One of the biggest pain points that the Indian ecosystem faces is that the capital infusion while on an upswing is still one-tenth of what more advanced startup ecosystems viz the US, receives. Also, several truly deserving startups end up fending for themselves without adequate tools to get noticed by like-minded investors. More than 50% of the portfolio companies of most VCs are ripe for next/ co-investing but methods to get them future rounds of investment are still heavily dependent on founders and or investors.

To address this and to support the startup ecosystem with uniquely designed solutions, Kofounderz Team has launched The Great Unicorn Hunt to further accelerate a highly conducive discovery and conversation platform. While the spurt of unicorn creation in India has been a positive development in the present times, the question that remains to be answered is, whether the ecosystem is doing enough? While the US and Chinese startup sectors gallop away with creating a higher number of Unicorns getting produced each year, the Indian startup ecosystem will have to either play the catch-up game much better or perhaps not only do different things but also do things differently.

As a precursor to The Great Unicorn Hunt, Kofounderz Team organised a series of conversations with key opinion leaders in the startup ecosystem. More than 50 venture capitalists, angel investors, family offices, incubators & accelerators, founders, and corporates participated in the run-up to the efforts of Kofounderz Team. These closed-door, invitations only conversations helped to get an insight from the leading players of the ecosystem who have been at the forefront of identifying, investing and nurturing winning propositions. The conversations sought responses to some very basic problem questions viz whether the pain points for the startup ecosystem are big enough? Can the startup sector do things differently to spot and nurture unicorns? Is there merit in creating a central platform that serves the requirement of the most promising startups to attract capital and talent?
