Mumbai airport switches entirely to green sources for energy; becomes India's 100% sustainable

Mumbai: Mumbai International Airport is one of India's only airports that is completely sustainable, having transferred all of its energy demands to green sources.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai obtains around 5% of its entire 100% electrical needs from on-site solar generating and the other 95% from other environmentally friendly sources including hydro and wind energy.

In order to usher in a sustainable future, the CSMIA saw an increase in the purchase of natural energy, going from a stunning 57% of green consumption in April 2022 to 98% between May and July. According to a CSMIA representative, the use of renewable energy sources eventually reached 100% in August 2022.

According to the spokeswoman, the airport is dedicated to continuously reducing its energy use and carbon impact through a number of programmes. Additionally, CSMIA first took the initiative to build a 1.06 MW rooftop solar power plant, which the airport later increased to 4.66 MW.

The CSMIA was the first organisation in India to introduce hybrid technology that has only used green energy since April 2022, paving the way for an aviation future that is extremely effective and low in carbon emissions. According to the spokesman, the CSMIA's sustainable project is a component of the airport's attempts to lessen its carbon footprint and advance toward "Net Zero" emissions.

Speaking on the occasion, CSMIA's spokesperson said, "We are extremely delighted to achieve this key milestone in our journey towards attaining a sustainable future for CSMIA. The diligent efforts of the airport in undertaking several thoughtful initiatives have paved the way to achieve this feat. As CSMIA aspires to become net-zero by 2029, this landmark event further encourages us to stay committed to our efforts in enhancing the operational efficiency of the airport while operating on fully renewable energy".
