The much-anticipated Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is set to resume in 2026, marking a significant development for thousands of devotees who revere the sacred site. On Friday, Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, welcomed the revival of the pilgrimage and confirmed that China will facilitate the journey of 1,000 Indian pilgrims this year.
In a message shared on X, Yu expressed optimism about the resumption of visits to Kangrinboqe Feng and Mapam Yuco — the Chinese names for Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar — located in the Xizang Autonomous Region. She noted that the pilgrimage has the potential to deepen spiritual connections and strengthen cultural ties between India and China, describing it as a meaningful link between two ancient civilizations.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had earlier announced on April 30 that the yatra would be conducted between June and August 2026. The annual pilgrimage, organized by the MEA in collaboration with the Government of China, holds immense religious and cultural importance. For Hindus, Mount Kailash is regarded as the abode of Lord Shiva, while the site also carries deep spiritual relevance for followers of Jainism and Buddhism.
According to the MEA, this year’s arrangements include 20 batches of pilgrims, each comprising 50 individuals. Ten groups will travel via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, while another ten will make the journey through the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. This dual-route system aims to streamline the pilgrimage process and accommodate the designated number of participants.
The application process has been made entirely digital to ensure transparency and efficiency. Interested individuals must submit their applications through the official website, kmy.gov.in. The selection of pilgrims will be conducted using a computerized random process designed to maintain fairness and gender balance.
Officials emphasized that the process — from registration to final selection — is fully automated. Applicants are required to register online and complete their submissions digitally, eliminating the need for physical correspondence such as letters or faxes. The website also provides a feedback mechanism where applicants can seek information, share suggestions, or raise concerns related to the pilgrimage.
Pilgrims may choose either of the two routes or indicate both as options in order of preference. The deadline for submitting applications has been set for May 19, 2026.
Traditionally organized between June and August or early September, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra remains one of the most spiritually significant journeys for Indian devotees. Open to eligible Indian citizens holding valid passports, the pilgrimage offers participants an opportunity to undertake a deeply revered religious expedition to one of the most sacred landscapes in the region.
With arrangements now in motion and diplomatic coordination reaffirmed, the 2026 edition of the yatra is poised to once again bring together faith, tradition, and cross-border cooperation.
