India should streamline R&D efforts, investments to become self-reliant: Tata's NG Subramaniam

NEW DELHI: There is a need to step up and streamline efforts related to research and development (R&D) activities and investments by way of unified actions to achieve self-reliance, an industry veteran and top executive of an Indian multinational said.

"India needs to streamline its research and development efforts and investments from academia, and private and public institutions towards the larger vision of being self-reliant. This calls for certain unified actions,” NG Subramaniam, COO Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Chairman, Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) said.

Subramaniam was speaking at The 5G Congress - 2022, organised by ETTelecom.

The Tata group company executive who is also spearheading country's vision for next generation technologies at the UN-backed International Telecommunications Union (ITU), said that an aligned vision for the future of 5G and 6G in terms of the outcome with cross coverage, capacity, experience, trust and security should be a top priority.

"Secondly, encourage and steer investments in R&D across the various dimensions of network, radios, antennas, compute and storage, and experiential applications," he said, adding that the focus should be on evolving architectures and products that will be loosely coupled, interoperable so that the deployment of the network can be disaggregated or aggregated as per the situation.

Further, the executive said that the fiberisation, satellite communication and spectral distribution for last-mile connectivity, enterprise and private networks would be essential, including deployment of the experiential applications.

Subramaniam believes that the country needs to do some "blue sky thinking" which, he said, would essentially call for a use of latest technology or those trends that one can foresee where the technology is likely to be in the year 2025 to 2030.
