India's becoming the Third Largest Domestic Aviation Market

In a recent development, India has surpassed Brazil and Indonesia to become the third-largest domestic aviation market, according to data from the aviation analytics firm OAG. The Indian aviation sector is dominated by two major players - IndiGo and Air India - which together hold orders for more than 1,000 aircraft. These two airlines account for around 90% of the domestic seat capacity in India. Meanwhile, the United States and China continue to retain their positions as the world's top two largest aviation markets.

At the heart of this success are the two dominant players in the Indian aviation sector - IndiGo and Air India. Together, these airlines hold orders for more than 1,000 aircraft, showcasing their ambitious plans to cater to the ever-growing demand for air travel within the country. Remarkably, these two carriers account for an astounding 90% of the domestic seat capacity in India, underscoring their dominance and the collaborative efforts that have driven this remarkable progress.

 

"India is the world's third largest domestic aviation market," proudly stated President Droupadi Murmu in her address to the joint sitting of Parliament. She highlighted the remarkable transformation that has taken place over the past decade, with the number of airline sectors increasing from 209 in April 2014 to a staggering 605 by April 2024. This expansion has directly benefited Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, providing greater connectivity and opportunities for economic growth across the country.


The growth in India's aviation market is further demonstrated by the impressive passenger numbers. During the January-May 2024 period, domestic airlines carried a remarkable 661.42 lakh passengers, a significant increase from the 636.07 lakh passengers transported during the same period the previous year.

 

India's aviation industry has not only witnessed a remarkable surge in domestic travel but has also emerged as a global player, with the country's airlines expanding their international footprint.
