India’s BA, MA degrees to get equivalence in the UK


Degrees of Indian students of certain bachelors, masters and doctoral courses will now be treated on par with those in the UK that would make them eligible for jobs there. The two sides on Thursday inked an MoU as per which Indian Senior Secondary School/Pre-University Certificates will be considered suitable for entry into the UK higher education institutions. Similarly, the Bachelors degree, Masters degree and Doctoral degree of India and the UK will also be considered equivalent to each other.


While professional degrees related to medicine, engineering, architecture and pharmacy are out of the scope of the MoU, commerce secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said that New Delhi will negotiate for their recognition in the free trade agreement, the talks for which are likely to conclude by August 31 and the pact would be signed by Diwali.


“From today onwards, UK degrees will be recognised as equivalent to Indian degree. You can take a degree there and will be eligible for employment here…this covers 90% of the graduates,” Subrahmanyam told reporters, adding that degrees in Bachelor and Masters of Arts (BA, MA) and Science (BSc, MSc) in India would be treated on par there. The MoU also covers degrees obtained from online courses.

The MoU provides for mutual recognition of educational qualifications and duration of study undertaken by students within duly approved and recognized higher education institutions in the two countries.


“The pact will also speed up the negotiations. It is a message from their side that irrespective of the political turbulence, things are on track,” he said.


As per the secretary, the fifth round of India-UK FTA began Monday and will continue till July 29 after which there will be no more rounds.


“By the time this round is over, we would have completed 17 or 18 chapters out of a total of 26. There is no more need to have rounds,” he said, adding that what is leftover “there will be 31 rounds in 31 days” as in August, the two sides will negotiate every day.


“I hope to conclude it by August 15 and another 15 days for cleaning, scrubbing and legal vetting. By August 31, we will be ready and by September their PM will also be ready,” he said, adding that the UK has assured India that irrespective of who is going to be the Prime Minister, there is across the board support for the FTA.


India is also working on giving greater market access to British apples and UK-manufactured medical devices, and machinery, and legal services. On the other hand, New Delhi’s demand are easier access for its marine product exports and social security or totalisation agreement.


Maritime, nurses MoU

India and the UK signed two MoUs on mutual recognition of educational qualifications including maritime education and a Framework Agreement on health care work force, aimed to enhance short-term bilateral mobility and ensure mutual recognition of qualifications.


These agreements are part of the commitments made by both parties under the Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP).


The MoU on maritime education qualification will pave the way for the two governments to mutually recognize the certificates of maritime education and training, competency and endorsements of seafarers issued by each other, and would make them eligible for employment on ships of eithe ..
