India aims to be the AI use-case capital of the world, says Nandan Nilekani

Nilekani also said that doomsday propagators of AI are protectionists while India will open technology for all

Nandan Nilekani, the chairman of Infosys and the architect of Aadhaar, expressed that India's approach to artificial intelligence (AI) differs from the global race to develop Large Language Models (LLMs). Instead, India aims to focus on creating AI use-cases that can benefit every citizen, envisioning an "Adbhut" (marvelous) India as the capital of AI use-cases.

During an event organized by People+AI on May 7 in Bengaluru, titled 'Making an Adbhut India,' Nilekani shared his perspective on the potential of population-scale AI in India. He emphasized that India does not seek to compete in the race to build the next LLM, leaving that pursuit to those with the necessary capital and interest. Rather, India's objective is to make a meaningful impact and empower its people with AI technology.

Nilekani's remarks coincided with the ongoing global rush to develop LLMs and maintain a competitive edge in AI. He highlighted the importance of experimentation and scaling AI initiatives, both by startups and the government, to drive adoption and application.

Taking a critical stance, Nilekani criticized AI enthusiasts and companies who propagate doomsday theories about AI and its potential negative effects. He viewed such sentiments as protectionist in nature, driven by the desire to monopolize the development of AI models for personal gain. In contrast, India seeks to foster openness and inclusivity in AI.

During the event, People+AI, an initiative by the EkStep Foundation, announced the launch of the Open Cloud Compute (OCC) project. OCC aims to establish a network for compute resources, addressing the increasing demand for AI infrastructure by providing an open platform.

Various other innovations were showcased at the event:

- Fintech company Setu unveiled Sesame, which claims to be India's first LLM specifically designed for the banking, financial services, and insurance sector. Developed in collaboration with indigenous AI research firm Sarvam AI, Sesame is poised to be a transformative solution in the financial services industry.

- DRiefcase, a personal health records app developed under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), presented the results of a pilot survey that demonstrated the utilization of the Jan Ki Baat AI framework. The survey focused on the ABDM Scan & Share module, which aims to reduce patient wait times at government-run hospitals.

- STAGE, an entertainment platform for regional Indian cultures, showcased India's first Haryanvi-dialect-based AI voice agent on their over-the-top (OTT) platform. STAGE, serving the Haryanvi and Rajasthani cultures, recently achieved profitability with over 1.2 million paying subscribers.

- Fynd, a startup, launched BharatDiffusion v2, a diffusion-based AI model designed to generate images reflecting India's diverse culture. Trained on a vast collection of Indian photos, this model produces high-quality and realistic pictures.

- Von Neumann AI introduced "JOHNAIC," a personal AI server that acts as an all-in-one solution for AI needs, reducing costs by 85 percent. JOHNAIC includes built-in SaaS and AI tools to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups. People+AI became the first customer of JOHNAIC, utilizing it for their own AI requirements while ensuring data privacy.

Overall, the event highlighted India's unique approach to AI, emphasizing the development of impactful use-cases and fostering openness and inclusivity in the AI ecosystem.
