Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek is reportedly taking a significant strategic leap: designing its own AI chip. According to individuals familiar with the matter, the Hangzhou-based firm has begun early-stage efforts to develop a semiconductor tailored for inference—the stage where trained AI models generate responses for users.
If successful, the initiative would reduce DeepSeek’s reliance on Nvidia and Huawei processors, which have powered the company’s globally popular models to date. The move signals a shift for a firm previously known for focusing almost exclusively on algorithmic innovation rather than hardware or commercial expansion.
From Model Breakthroughs to Silicon Strategy
DeepSeek gained international prominence over a year ago when it launched two highly efficient AI models that quickly attracted global attention, surprising industry leaders in Silicon Valley and policymakers in Washington. The company became a symbol of China’s growing AI capabilities, despite maintaining a relatively low public profile.
Until now, DeepSeek’s strength lay in model development. However, the reported chip project suggests it is now seeking greater control over the computing infrastructure behind its technology.
The proposed chip would be designed specifically for inference tasks rather than training new AI models. Inference has become increasingly important as AI tools move from experimentation to real-world deployment, where generating responses efficiently and at scale is critical.

DeepSeek’s hardware ambitions unfold against the backdrop of geopolitical and market pressures. U.S. export restrictions prohibit Chinese firms from purchasing Nvidia’s most advanced chips, forcing domestic AI developers to rely on downgraded alternatives or homegrown solutions.
Huawei has benefited from these restrictions, capturing roughly half of China’s $50 billion domestic AI chip market. Its processors have supplied DeepSeek and other major players. However, Huawei’s dominance faces mounting competition as Chinese technology giants such as Alibaba and Baidu accelerate development of their own AI chips.
DeepSeek itself has relied on both Nvidia and Huawei hardware. The company previously disclosed that the foundational model behind its R1 reasoning system—whose cost-efficient performance rattled U.S. technology stocks in January 2025—was trained using Nvidia’s H800 chip. That processor, specifically tailored for China, was later banned by Washington in late 2023.
More recently, DeepSeek has leaned more heavily on Huawei. In April, it introduced its V4 model optimized for Huawei’s Ascend processors. Huawei confirmed that its chips contributed to training V4-Flash, a streamlined version of the model. Demand for Huawei’s Ascend 950 chips reportedly increased sharply following the launch.
Early-Stage Efforts and Quiet Recruitment
Sources indicate that DeepSeek’s chip initiative remains in its formative phase. The company has been engaging with external partners, including chip design firms, foundries and memory suppliers. Discussions reportedly began about a year ago.
At the same time, DeepSeek has expanded its hiring of semiconductor engineers. Recruitment has been conducted discreetly, without public job postings, reflecting the company’s traditionally low-profile approach.
DeepSeek has not publicly commented on the reported chip development plans.
Following Global AI Trends
The push toward custom silicon aligns with broader global trends. Leading AI developers are increasingly seeking to control their hardware stacks to reduce dependency on Nvidia.
OpenAI recently unveiled its first in-house inference chip, developed in collaboration with Broadcom. Anthropic has also reportedly explored designing proprietary AI hardware. For DeepSeek, however, the strategy carries additional urgency due to export restrictions and Beijing’s emphasis on technological self-sufficiency.
Founder Liang Wenfeng acknowledged in a rare 2024 interview that chip export controls posed challenges for the company. Developing proprietary hardware could offer greater flexibility and resilience amid tightening global supply constraints.
Targeting the Inference Boom
Industry demand is increasingly shifting toward inference computing as AI applications scale. Unlike model training—which requires massive computational resources—inference can be optimized with specialized, energy-efficient chips. These processors are typically less power-intensive and potentially more cost-effective than general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs).
Nevertheless, designing competitive AI chips is capital-intensive and time-consuming. Manufacturing remains another obstacle. U.S. policies restrict Chinese chip designers’ access to the most advanced overseas foundries, while separate curbs limit access to high-bandwidth memory, a key component for AI performance.
A New Funding Chapter
DeepSeek’s hardware push coincides with a broader strategic evolution. After years of avoiding external investors, the company is reportedly preparing to raise $7 billion in its first major funding round, with a projected valuation between $52 billion and $59 billion.
Such capital would provide substantial resources for semiconductor development, which requires long timelines and significant investment.

If DeepSeek successfully develops its own inference chip, it would not only enhance operational independence but also reshape competitive dynamics within China’s AI ecosystem.
