According to the State Post Bureau, over 80 billion parcels were delivered in the first six months of the year, surpassing last year's record and reaching the milestone 59 days earlier. This impressive feat is attributed to the increasing demand for online shopping and the competitive efforts of e-commerce platforms to expand their reach.
The value of goods transported in China also experienced significant growth, reaching 135.3 trillion RMB (14.72 trillion USD), a 5.9% increase compared to the previous year, according to the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing. Violations, such as confirming delivery without the recipient's consent or mishandling parcels, can result in fines ranging from under 10,000 RMB (1,375.89 USD) to 10,000-30,000 RMB (4,127.68 USD). These changes have added pressure to an already time-constrained workforce.
Furthermore, pricing competition remains fierce, with the average price per delivery dropping 4.1% to 9.15 RMB (1.26 USD) in 2023. In response, delivery providers are diversifying their services to include "instant deliveries" of groceries within an hour and other localized lifestyle offerings.
