Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max in cosmic orange has seen unprecedented demand, selling out within three days in the US and India. The shortage has forced delays in deliveries, with pre-orders extending beyond October 7. Apple’s production in India is ramping up, despite challenges from China’s restrictions, and aims to meet growing global demand. With increasing sales and market share in India, Apple’s expansion plans face both opportunities and logistical hurdles.

Apple's latest flagship, the iPhone 17 Pro Max in the new cosmic orange finish, has created a buzz in tech circles, becoming an instant hit among consumers. Within just three days of pre-orders opening, the device sold out for in-store pickup across the US and India, leaving eager customers scrambling for alternatives.

High Demand Leaves Cosmic Orange Out of Stock

In India, the entire iPhone 17 Pro Max lineup, including the sought-after cosmic orange variant, is unavailable for in-store pickup, as confirmed by the Apple India website. Similarly, the iPhone 17 Pro series in this vibrant color is also out of stock for pre-booking with store pickup options.

"We regret to inform you that due to overwhelming demand, all storage variants of the cosmic orange iPhone 17 Pro Max are currently sold out," an Apple specialist remarked. The executive added that the deep blue color remains available in limited quantities at select locations. Despite the unavailability, Apple assures customers they are working diligently to replenish stock.

Pre-Orders, Prices, and Availability

Apple launched the iPhone 17 series with prices ranging from ₹82,900 to ₹2,29,900 in India, with pre-orders starting on September 12. Devices will officially be available for pre-booked customers from September 19. Additionally, select stores will carry limited quantities of the new iPhones on a first-come, first-served basis for walk-in buyers.

For those unable to secure the cosmic orange variant, Apple is allowing continued pre-orders, but deliveries for such orders will commence after October 7. In the US, the iPhone 17 series is priced between $799 (approximately ₹70,370) and $1,999 (₹1.76 lakh).

India's Role in Apple's Supply Chain

Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn is Apple’s largest producer of iPhones, with significant facilities in both China and India. Interestingly, iPhones produced in India primarily cater to the US market. Apple recently started manufacturing the iPhone 17 series at its Bangalore facility, which operates under constraints due to informal restrictions imposed by China.

Despite these challenges, Apple has ambitious plans to ramp up production. The company aims to manufacture 60 million iPhones this year, a significant increase from the estimated 35-40 million units produced during 2024-25. Reports also suggest Apple assembled 60% more iPhones, valued at $22 billion, in India for the financial year ending March 31, 2025.

India's Growing iPhone Market

Apple's presence in India continues to grow, with iPhone supplies rising by 21.5% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, totaling 5.9 million units. The iPhone 16 emerged as the best-selling model during this period. In the June 2025 quarter, Apple’s shipments in India grew by 19.7%, securing a 7.5% market share in the nation’s competitive smartphone market.

However, logistical hurdles persist. Sources indicate that China has been informally restricting the supply of essential resources, such as capital goods and skilled labor, needed to expand iPhone production in India. This could impact Apple’s ability to meet its lofty production goals, especially as demand for its devices soars globally.

Meeting Global Demand

In the US, iPhone sales reached 75.9 million units in 2024, according to an analysis by S&P Global. To keep up with surging demand, Apple may need to double its shipments, either by increasing production capacity or redirecting units meant for other markets.

The cosmic orange iPhone 17 Pro Max’s meteoric rise in popularity is a testament to Apple’s innovative design and marketing strategies. However, the supply constraints highlight the challenges of meeting global demand for one of the world’s most coveted smartphones. As Apple works to scale its production capabilities and overcome geopolitical hurdles, customers eager to snag the latest iPhone may need to exercise patience.
