Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a landmark moment in Indian political history, officially becoming the longest-serving head of an elected government in the country.

The distinction of 8,931 days in office is calculated by combining Modi’s years as Chief Minister of Gujarat and his tenure as Prime Minister—bringing him close to completing 25 consecutive years in executive leadership.

This rare achievement underscores an enduring presence in public office that spans nearly a quarter century, reflecting sustained electoral success and long-term political influence at both state and national levels.

From State Leadership to the National Stage

Narendra Modi’s journey in executive office began on October 7, 2001, when he assumed the role of Chief Minister of Gujarat. Over more than 13 years in that position, he became the longest-serving Chief Minister in the state’s history, serving until May 21, 2014.

Just days later, on May 26, 2014, Modi was sworn in as India’s 14th Prime Minister. His ascent to national leadership marked a turning point in Indian politics, as he led his party to a clear majority in the Lok Sabha.

Since then, Modi has secured victories in three consecutive general elections—in 2014, 2019, and 2024—reinforcing his political dominance and continued appeal among voters. He also became the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full terms and return for a third.

Notably, he is India’s first Prime Minister born after Independence and holds the distinction of having the longest prior experience as a Chief Minister before assuming the nation’s top office.

A Record of Political Longevity

Crossing the 8,931-day mark places Modi at the top of India’s elected leadership timeline. The milestone highlights not only personal political resilience but also a sustained mandate from the electorate over multiple decades.

Longevity at this level of governance is uncommon in democratic systems, where political shifts often bring leadership changes. Modi’s tenure—spanning state and national leadership—illustrates a period of consistent authority within India’s evolving political landscape.

Expanding Influence in the Digital Era

Beyond electoral politics, the Prime Minister’s presence has grown significantly in the digital sphere.

Earlier this month, his official YouTube channel surpassed 30 million subscribers, placing him among the most-followed global political leaders on the platform. His subscriber base exceeds that of many current and former heads of government worldwide.

On Instagram, Modi crossed the 100 million follower mark in February, becoming the first sitting world leader to achieve that milestone. Since joining the platform in 2014, his account has steadily expanded its reach and currently stands at approximately 101 million followers.

Meanwhile, on X (formerly Twitter), his following has reached 106.4 million, further solidifying his position as one of the most prominent political figures on social media globally.

A Defining Political Chapter

As he enters his 25th year in continuous executive office, Narendra Modi’s tenure represents a defining chapter in India’s democratic journey. From state governance in Gujarat to leading the nation for three consecutive terms, his political career has been marked by record-setting longevity and sustained public endorsement.

With nearly a quarter century in elected leadership, Modi’s latest milestone adds another historic entry to India’s political record books—one shaped by endurance, electoral victories, and a strong digital-era presence.
