Why India needs a national strategy on AgriTech


Agriculture touches everyone's life like no other industry in India, clearly indicated by the fact that 60 percent of the Indians are directly or indirectly find livelihood in Agriculture contributing about 18 percent to India's GDP. India is one of the largest producers for most agricultural crops but ranks low in terms of productivity. For comparison, China produces 40% more cereals and 300% more fruits than India with 30% less area under cultivation and 40% lower average land holding.


India today is not only self-sufficient in respect of demand for food but is also a net exporter of Agri products occupying seventh position globally. India’s GDP estimates for the first quarter of 2021-22 released by the central government shows rural economy, driven by the farm sector, has been steadily resilient to both the waves of the pandemic.
