China reaches 67% internet penetration with 940 million users


As of June, the number of internet users in China had reached 940 million, accounting for one-fifth of the world’s total users. This represents a 67% internet penetration rate in China, about 5% higher than the global average. 98% of residents living in China’s poor, rural villages have access to the internet through fibre-optic cables.


The report released by the China Internet Network Information Centre also revealed that 99.2% of China’s internet users own a mobile phone which they can use to connect to the internet. Internet services, such as online education, medical consultations and remote working services, have developed considerably this year due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The number of online-education users now exceeds 380 million.


The report also found that 309 million Chinese citizens use e-commerce livestreaming, an increase of 44.3 million, or 16.7%, from 2020 Q2.
